Daphne and Sam leave Tara’s party and head into the woods where she undresses to reveal herself as a doe, a deer, a female deer [sorry, couldn’t resist]. Sam is freaked out because he has never encountered another true shape-shifter. Daphne states she is proud to be a shape-shifter and decided to clue Sam in after seeing him jump into the lake as a dog the night before. Sam has more questions, but Daphne quickly disappears as their conversation is interrupted by Arlene and Terry, whom were also looking for a nice quiet place to, um, get to know one another better [if you know what I mean].
The next day Sam asks Daphne why she disappeared on him. She continues to be evasive saying they can talk more about it later. This time it is Lafayettes return that interrupts their discussion. Sam is pissed at him, asking where he has been the past few weeks with no phone call. Lafayette is subdued and takes Sam’s yelling without a single sassy comeback. Sam knows something happened, but Lafayette is not talking, so Sam tells him he can come back to work at Merlotte’s.
Sam finally gets the chance to speak with Daphne as they close the bar. They compare how it feels when they shift, which turns into several sexual innuendos that end with a“nice rack, nice balls” comment – did I mention that this conversation takes place on the bar’s pool table. Classy, right!
Tara and Eggs wake-up in bed post-birthday celebration the next morning. She shows Eggs the creepy Gran picture that Sookie gave her and tells him that Gran raised her more than her mom and was a truly good person. Then she tells Eggs this was the first good birthday she has ever had. Downstairs she finds Maryann in the kitchen where she drops the bombshell that they are moving in. Apparently the big, white house of paradise was a loner and they are homeless now that the owner is back in town. Surely Sookie wouldn’t mind if Tara invited her new roommates to come live with them. Tara rightfully refuses Maryann and goes to Eggs to vent, but he turns it around and makes Tara feel guilty by saying they all take care of each other cause that is what real family is.
That night at Merlotte’s, Tara is at work with Maryann casts a new type of spell - instead of inducing dancing and orgies, she can also whips up some anger and discontent, all directed at Tara until she finally snaps. After work a weary Tara returns home to find Maryann waiting up for her at the kitchen table, looking exactly like Gran. Eggs must have clued her in on what Tara needs most when she is upset. [Okay, this scene seriously creeped me out – Maryann is sans make-up, hair in a bun, and she is even wearing Gran’s lobster apron]. MaryGran provides a sympathetic ear and comfort food, which convinces Tara that they are her family and should all stay. I can’t wait to hear her explanation when Sookie returns from Dallas.
Jason is rudely awakened by a bullhorn early the next morning for some Soldiers of the Sun calisthenics. Apparently the sacrifices for the service of God don’t even allow him to pee or brush his teeth. He gets yelled at by drill sergeant Gabe [doing his best full metal jacket impersonation], and then continues his competition with Luke on who is the best soldier. By the end of the day, Jason proves his leadership by helping Luke over a fence and not leaving him behind, which gives him the seal of approval in Sarah’s eyes.
Back at the Newlin house Jason walks in on Steve and Sarah arguing. They put on a good face for him, but Steve shuts his wife out of the conversation by taking Jason downstairs to show off his arsenal of guns, holy water bullets, and wooden arrows, which Jason realizes are also“itty-bitty stakes”. Sarah gets her revenge later that night by interrupting Jason’s bath-time because God wants her to give Jason a reward. She speaks about Mary Magdalene washing the feet of Jesus, but it was not Jason’s feet that she was lathering up in the end. [paybacks a bitch, Steve].
Meanwhile, Sookie chases a freaked-out Bellboy Barry down the hall of the Camilla Hotel. He is berating himself inside his head as Sookie reads his mind and tells him not to be afraid of her because they are alike. She quickly introduces herself and finds they share similar traits in that they cannot hear vampires and cannot be glamoured by them. However, Barry has no interest in being her friend, stating that he doesn’t know “what fried corn-on-the-cob town she comes from or what candy-ass vampires she hangs around with, but this is Dallas baby, and the vampires here are scary as shit”. Sookie sticks up for the LA vamps, saying they are just as scary and she and Barry need to help each other out around them. Bill continues to attempt to parent Jessica by denying her the human blood donor and vampire porn, so she storms off to her room with a defiant “Keep Out”. Jessica decides to give Hoyt a call, and he not only remembers her, but also says he can’t stop thinking about her. Hoyt’s mama is not as enthralled saying that a respectable woman wouldn’t call so late. Then they geek out teenager-style over the phone by watching TV together as Hoyt reads his comic book to her. [They are my new favorite couple on this show!]
Meanwhile, Bill questions Sookie on where she has been, and she makes a lame excuse about vending machines then distracts him from his worries with some couch nookie. [jeez, move it to the bedroom, don’t you remember there’s a teenager in the next room]. The next day he awakens to find that Sookie has met Barry the Bellboy and he is also telepathic. Sookie is excited to meet someone like herself, but Bill is more concerned with people knowing about her abilities. He asks her to leave with him back to Bon Temps, but she will not break her promise to Eric to find Godric.
Sookie leaves Bill in bed the next morning and heads downstairs to find Barry at the disappointing continental breakfast. [although it looks pretty standard to me - has she never stayed at a hotel before? ] She picks right back up on their shared gift conversation. Barry thinks of it more like a curse that has ruined his life; he only works at the vamp hotel to get some peace. She is eager to train him how to shut out the voices and tells him he can even make some money using his skills, but he continues to want nothing to do with their conversation or with Sookie.
That night they meet the Dallas vampire nest at the missing Godric’s house. Isabella and Stan are Lieutenants for Area 9 and have conflicting views on pretty much everything. Stan is not impressed with humans and wants to take action against the FOTS even if it starts a war, while Isabella dates a human and thinks the FOTS are amateurs and they should wait and gather proof. They constantly bicker and drives Eric crazy enough to call them incompetent idiots. Sookie finally has enough of it as well and offers the best solution – since they don’t know her name or what she looks like, she will infiltrate the FOTS and read their minds to find Godric. Bill is not happy with the plan because they cannot protect Sookie, but Eric decides it is the best option available. Bill continues to wonder why Eric is so intense about this mission and asks to speak privately with him. As Bill demands to know why is Godric so important, we flashback:
Eric is a severely injured Viking warrior that is waiting for death to claim him. His men are quickly killed while watching over him, and suddenly a tribal looking boy hovers over him. He says he was very impressed watching Eric in battle and offers him the choice of death or life, forever. Eric chooses eternal life as the vampire boy turns him.
Back in present time, Eric quietly reveals to Bill that Godric is his maker.Upon returning to the hotel, Sookie once more attempts to reach out to Barry, only to discover that he has quit his job at the hotel. Turns out Sookie has one more bad surprise waiting for her later that night as she is making out with Bill, the camera pans down the hallway to show a modern-dressed Lorena [Bill’s maker] walking down the hall towards their room. This can’t end well….
Stay tuned next week for some more true blood….
